
MPS, GLOBALG.A.P. and Fairtrade: Reading the Certification Map
Three overlapping schemes, one farm, and a lot of duplicated paperwork. What each certification actually asks for, and where the premium is.

Certification in floriculture is not one decision. It is three overlapping schemes serving three different gatekeepers: GLOBALG.A.P. as the food-safety and good-practice baseline, MPS-ABC as the environmental scheme that matters for the Dutch auction, and Rainforest Alliance for social and environmental assurance demanded by UK supermarkets. Which ones you need is determined by where you sell, not by which is best.[4]
MPS-ABC: measurement as the qualification
MPS-ABC is the basic certification for sustainably produced plants and flowers, and its structure is unusual: you earn it through a points system based on recorded use of crop protection agents, fertilisers, energy, water, and waste. It is, functionally, a continuous data submission rather than an annual inspection.[1]
MPS-GAP sits on top: it is benchmarked against GLOBALG.A.P., meets Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) requirements, and requires that you already participate in MPS-ABC with a valid qualification. The sequencing matters when planning — you cannot shortcut straight to MPS-GAP.[1]
Carbon footprint enters the conversation
MPS has developed the HortiFootprint Calculator to measure the environmental impact of pot plants and cut flowers across their full life cycle. Life-cycle assessment is a step beyond input tracking: it pulls in freight mode, packaging, and energy source, which means the freight decision and the certification score are now linked. A farm moving volume from air to sea improves its footprint number as a side effect.[2]
GLOBALG.A.P. and Fairtrade
The GLOBALG.A.P. Flowers & Ornamentals standard mandates practice requirements across every stage from planting through harvest. Fairtrade takes a different angle — worker empowerment and the elimination of dangerous pesticides, alongside a lighter carbon footprint — and it is the one with a directly quantifiable return: Fairtrade rose certification commands a premium in the region of €0.05–0.15 per stem in German and Dutch ethical retail channels.[4]
On a farm shipping millions of stems, five to fifteen euro cents per stem is not a marginal number. It is frequently the single strongest financial argument for certification investment, and it is worth modelling explicitly against the audit and compliance cost rather than treating certification as an undifferentiated overhead.
The shared substrate
- Crop protection records: product, rate, block, date, operator, interval compliance.
- Fertiliser and water use by block and period.
- Energy consumption, increasingly split by source.
- Waste streams and disposal routes.
- Worker records: hours, training, protective equipment, grievance handling.
Every scheme asks for variations on that same list. Farms that maintain it as one operational dataset rather than as three audit-season projects find each additional certification cheap to add. Farms that treat each audit as a separate documentation exercise pay the full cost every time.
